Anyone interested in a cost sharing trip to the Avalon Airshow? We are departing Lismore for Melbourne (Essendon) on the morning of Friday 3/3/17. I'm attending an aviation medicine meeting in Melbourne on Saturday 4/3/17, and will then be flying the Baron into Avalon East for the show on Sunday 5/3/17. You could attend the show on the Saturday too, but would need to use the public transport options from Melbourne to get there. We then plan to fly back to Lismore from Avalon in evening of Sunday 5/3/17 (say 1700 departure from Avalon, ETA Lismore say 2200 via a stop at Orange for fuel). Send me a message if you're interested. Cheers, Izaac ... See MoreSee Less

Flying Training

The Northern Rivers Aero Club has a rich history of flight training from our base at Lismore Aerodrome. We are uniquely positioned to give you an unrivaled learning experience, no matter where you are on your aviation journey.

Some of the standout features of training with us include:

  • Reasonable airport traffic volume (that is outside controlled airspace) that provides limited delays but also experience in managing other aircraft working in your vicinity

  • Close proximity to the Gold Coast controlled airspace for  easily accessible experience as your license training progresses

  • Excellent facilities: free on-site accommodation, separate lecture and training rooms, quiet study areas, flight planning space plus a kitchen

  • A wide variety of training aircraft including Recreational Aviation Australia (RA-Aus) registered aeroplanes and more complex General Aviation trainers

  • Qualified and highly experienced instructors

Meet the Fleet

We’re exceptionally proud of the wide range of aircraft we have on offer to our students and Aero Club members. A key part of our training philosophy is to start students on the inexpensive RA-Aus aeroplanes and progress them through to General Aviation (VH- registered) aircraft; this keeps costs substantially lower for initial flying training and helps to develop skilled pilots.

Take a look at a few of the aircraft that we operate:

Jabiru J-170 “5066”

The Jabiru J-170 is our two seat, basic training aircraft which we recommend all new pilots start with; it is cheap to run, and subsequently inexpensive for our students. Best of all, it’s an absolute dream to fly.

Jabiru J-230 “7296”

Our J-230 is the next step up from the basic trainer, 5066. Once you start your cross-country training you will feel very much at home in 7296 with its added range and increased cruise speed.

Cessna 172RG “JJC”

One of our advanced trainers, JJC is a retractable undercarriage, constant-speed version of the iconic Cessna 172. Perfect for advanced Private Pilot Licence training as well as meeting the complexity requirements of the Commercial Pilot Licence, JJC is a definite favourite with our pilots.
